General/Position Summary
The Manager of FP&A is a key member of Vertex's Finance business partner organization, supporting the Global Clinical Operations (GCO) function by providing financial direction and insight including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs, helping GCO deliver their short-term and long-term goals through proactive day-to-day support, challenge, influence and insight. The role ensures that all functional activities are appropriately reflected in company budgets, forecasts, and long-range planning and will build analytics to help decision making. Located in a fast-paced and complex environment, this role demands the ability to navigate ambiguities. Regular engagement with GCO leadership is an important part of the role.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial business partnering with the GCO leadership team, including the Clinical Trial Management function.

  • Manage the financial performance management processes for GCO (objective-setting, budget vs. actuals, etc.), including the monthly forecast process, with a focus on influencing business operations and decisions through an understanding of the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes.

  • Manage the financial planning process for GCO functions (budget, forecast, long range plan) to provide insightful and influential forward-looking direction, to develop key scenarios, and to identify key risks/uncertainties and plans for potential mitigation.

  • Lead various process improvement projects that span across the Finance organization.

  • Build analytics that support business case-based decision making for investments and capital allocation.

  • Partner with Human Resources on Headcount reporting, forecasting and planning.

  • Work closely with other members of the CFO organization including Corporate Finance, International Finance and Accounting to maintain a continuous improvement mindset and promote strong communication and efficient processes.

  • Perform ad-hoc analyses that support business decision making and process/system improvement initiatives.

Required Education Level

  • Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or science-related field. (Master's Degree or CPA preferred).

Required Experience

  • Requires 5 years of experience providing financial support in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questionsand complex business decisions.

  • Proven expertise utilizing advanced Excel skills to interpret large amounts of data.

  • Skilled in PowerPoint; knowledge of Hyperion.

  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaboration with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.

  • Understanding of GAAP and key accounting principles.

  • A continuous improvement and automation mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
