JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Field Engineer manages and performs field-testing projects in the electric power industry including utilities, generation plants, and industrial sites. This individual coordinates project resources for field testing apparatus such as MV/HV cables, generators, motors, isophase buses, transformers, circuit breakers, and accessories. The successful candidate trains field engineers in testing theory and methods. The Senior Field Engineer will collect and analyze data to prepare technical reports and present their results with recommended actions on the tested electrical assets to customers. Duties will also include direct interaction with customers and collaboration with the Sales team to define project scope and feasibility for proposals to clients. This role will be based in our Marlborough, MA office reporting to the Field Services Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate field-testing projects, including scheduling of personnel, equipment, and client communication.
  • Perform PD Site Acceptance testing on MV/HV cables, transformers, generators, and motors.
  • Perform online and offline PD identification and localization on MV/HV cables, transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, switchyards, and bus systems.
  • Perform electrical field-testing of HV assets at customer locations including, but not limited to, utility companies, generation plants, and industrial sites.
  • Perform EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) testing on motors, generators, isophase buses.
  • Perform routine and special electrical testing of power transformers, voltage regulators, generators, and circuit breakers from different manufacturers (ABB, Siemens, Waukesha, SMIT, and others).
  • Perform electrical data analysis for Condition Assessment projects and write technical reports.
  • Perform QA review of reports generated by Field Engineers.
  • Assist Sales Department with scope definition for project proposals.
  • Provide training on theory and testing to other Field Engineers as needed.
  • Participate (write technical papers and make oral presentations) at conferences, seminars, and other related events in support of department objectives.
  • Travel Required: Approximately 50%. This level can vary due to customer demand.

DECISION-MAKING LATITUDE

  • Make recommendations to customers regarding testing and maintenance/corrective actions based on data and background information.
  • Review and approve recommendations on technical reports from other engineers.
  • Assess equipment condition to avoid failure or determine need for repairs.
  • Support with project scope, planning and equipment inventory to meet requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical/Electronics/Power Engineering
  • Post-graduate studies (Master's in Electrical Engineering) desired

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in substation, power plants, nuclear facilities, or industrial power systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating and trouble-shooting test equipment used for electrical apparatus tests.
  • Minimum of 3 years field testing experience with transformers (including bushings, arrestors and CTs), generators, motors, and circuit breakers, particularly performing the following: Power Factor and Capacitance, SFRA, and EMI.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience evaluating electrical test data from power apparatus for detailed apparatus condition assessment.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience producing customer reports covering testing methodology and data analysis.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience providing customer technical support (verbal and written).
  • Familiarity with Partial Discharge measurement.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (Not Required):

  • Experience with testing or maintenance of high voltage assets in power plants or heavy industry
  • Experience with onshore and offshore petrochemical high voltage electrical systems
  • PD testing and analysis of HV apparatus
  • Acoustic Emission testing
  • Certified Infrared thermographer

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently on jobsites
  • Knowledge of power equipment (transformers, generators, cables, motors)
  • Familiar with industrial sites and generation plants
  • Experienced traveler (domestic and international)
  • Must be available to respond for emergency travel
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills, as well as good presentation skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, move equipment, climb ladders, and work outside, sometimes under adverse environmental conditions. Ability to travel by air and car for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job the employee is often required to sit, use computers, read, write, type, use copy machines, use telephones, and utilize written and oral communication to interact with clients and co-workers. Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job related skills, as well as relevant education or training experience.

Salary Pay Range Minimum $113,035.84 - Midpoint $141,294.80
