General Summary:

Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join the Engineering and Materials Science group in Boston, MA. The successful candidate will be a highly productive, results-oriented individual, able to multi-task and generate and implement original ideas that contribute to the successful development and scale-up of drug substance processes, including crystallizations. Strong communication, organization, and planning skills and a high level of technical aptitude and creativity are required for success in this position.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support fine chemical / drug substance process development via laboratory development and pilot plant scale-up.
  • Conceive, execute and interpret crystallizations, synthetic organic and engineering-related laboratory experiments with a high degree of reliability and independence
  • Use sound scientific understanding of chemistry and chemical engineering fundamentals and an understanding of applied kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport fundamentals, as well as familiarity with modern laboratory instrumentation, automation, and laboratory/plant implementation of process analytical technology to contribute to the team's goals.
  • Assist in the timely development of novel and creative technical solutions to overcome scale-up and manufacturing obstacles
  • Collaborate within a large interdisciplinary team comprised of chemical engineers; organic, physical, and analytical chemists; materials and solid-state scientists, and formulation development scientists

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in the development of one or more of the following unit operations: liquid phase organic synthesis, crystallization, reaction engineering, or other aspects relevant to fine chemical or drug substance processing.
  • Possess a sound fundamental and applied understanding of the chemical engineering fundamentals
  • Data analysis; statistical design of experiments; QbD concepts, and fluency with the use of mechanistic models to develop and optimize multi-step chemical processes

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline .
  • PhD with 2-5 years, MS with 5 plus years, or BS with 8 plus years of relevant laboratory experience with crystallization of small molecules.
  • Proven communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with statistical design of experiments and familiarity with common physical property and process modeling tools (Aspen, Dynochem, Matlab, gPROMS, Python, etc.).

In this On-Site designated role, you will work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
