  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Full Time
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm
  • Required Travel: None

What you will need:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • One year professional Chemotherapy Infusion experience or care of the Hematology/Oncology patient preferred
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Current Illinois Nursing Licensure or pending
  • Current BLS Certification Card
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Card Preferred
  • Oncology Certified Nurse Preferred

General Summary:

As an experienced practitioner, is accountable for providing high quality, individualized, goal directed nursing care for all levels of Hematology/Oncology patients and their significant others in accordance with the mission, vision and philosophy of the Division of Nursing in our Comprehensive Community Cancer Center. This clinical nurse will exemplify the role of caring for patients receiving standard therapy, high-dose regimens and for those on research protocols. This nurse will be proficient in the procedures and interventions for triaging patients who will be receiving cytotoxic and therapeutic agents.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions
Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Endeavor Health and exhibits a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards while working within a comprehensive, multidisciplinary environment

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of nursing care to medical oncology, radiation oncology and hematology patients.
  • Works in close collaboration with Oncologists.
  • Collaborates and maintains relationship with other specialties to ensure optimal care.
  • Reviews and updates patients electronic medical record
  • Obtain and enter Physician orders into electronic record.
  • Assist with patient flow in and out of the clinic.
  • Telephone Triage of high volume calls
  • Symptom Management
  • Pre and post chemotherapy/Biotherapy patient education.
  • Phlebotomy
  • Medication Management: oral chemotherapy and supportive medications, refills and e-scribe.
  • Prior authorization of oral chemotherapeutic and associated drugs
  • Coordinate patient treatment appointments
  • Support staff as needed with patient scheduling.
  • Proficient in vascular access care, maintenance and management.
  • Identify patient needs and safety issues and intervenes immediately
  • Determine urgency of patient situation
  • Follow-up phone calls daily.
  • Performs designated nursing and other cancer care activities according to established department policies and procedures, and the standard of care.
  • Review patients for appropriate accrual to research trials, collaborating closely with the research coordinator.
  • Attains knowledge and competency reflective of current standards of practice.
  • Interacts and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues.
  • Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of nursing practice.
  • Integrates research findings into nursing practice and collaborates with Oncology Research.
  • Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
  • Communicates information to others as appropriate to maintain effective patient flow.
  • Participates in programs related to cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, support and survivorship.
  • Attend relevant meetings as assigned

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

Committee membership as needed


INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS

Patients and their families and significant others, Division of Nursing Staff, Medical Staff and other hospital personnel.


ENVIRONMENT

  • May be in an upright position and moving about most of the working time

  • Potential for exposure to chemotherapy, biotherapy, hormones, chemicals, airborne diseases, blood and bodily fluids
  • Risk of injury by violent patient
