Overview

TRC delivers advanced energy, decarbonization, and resiliency solutions through program management, research, and advisory services across the United States. TRC's Research and Consulting (R&C) team (within the Advanced Energy practice) is focused on developing and deploying decarbonization and energy efficiency solutions for our clients - utilities, non-profits, local governments, and state and federal agencies. We consult on policy research, technology research, building code development, program management, market assessments, and engineering analysis.

The R&C team is seeking a qualified individual to support building simulation and energy analysis used to develop energy codes, decarbonization policy, and support emerging technology market adoption. Candidates must possess building simulation technical capabilities and knowledge of building science and building systems. Your role will include hands-on building simulation analysis to support a wide range of topic areas. No project is the same, and you'll get exposure to lots of different types of work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. Projects will include analysis of energy efficiency, grid responsive buildings, decarbonization, distributed energy resources, human factors, and control systems. You will also support the Senior Manager - Building Simulation (manager) in ideating and implementing research and simulation plans, and fostering a developmental environment for building simulation staff.

An ideal candidate would be a building scientist or engineer with a minimum of four to seven (4-7) years of experience in building simulation analysis (experience can include graduate research using building simulation). The ideal candidate will be assertive, personable, and a self-starter, with the capacity to support multiple tasks across multiple teams. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal technical team members and external customers.

Job Location - California location preferred. Remote positions anywhere in the continental United States will be considered.


Responsibilities

Primary Work Area Responsibilities (75%)

This is a technical position responsible for developing and delivering a wide variety of energy simulation studies, with close collaboration with a team of energy simulation analysts. This position requires good technical skills that will be used to conduct work independently, as well as support and review the work of others. This position requires an individual who enjoys and can handle multiple projects covering multiple technical areas and multiple tasks.

The position will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to:

  • California Energy Code Development
  • Local Jurisdiction Reach/Stretch Code Development
  • National Model Code Development
  • Energy Policy Analysis and Advising
  • Emerging Technologies Research & Tech-to-Market services

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the development and maintenance of building simulation and analysis frameworks.
  • Ideate and implement simulation and research plans for projects with guidance from manager.
  • Conduct technical analysis in support of developing policy solutions such as building energy codes, local ordinances.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and developing solutions to complex energy simulation challenges.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams, speaking to the best practices and technical execution of building simulation.
  • Conduct quality control review of the work of peers and junior staff.
  • Translate results into actionable recommendations and communicate via written reports and graphically.
  • Conduct meetings and presentations.
  • Work with manager in facilitating additional projects as they arise.

Mentoring and Oversight Responsibility (25%)

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide coordination, guidance, and training to building simulation analysts as needed to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support the review of teammates' work to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Stay informed about energy issues and industry trends through technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations.
  • Support the development of internal energy simulation workflow, documentation, and training material.
  • Assist in creating and facilitating developmental opportunities for junior staff.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • University degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, Physics, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience in building simulation analysis (experience can include graduate research using building simulation). More experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building science and building systems, including envelope, HVAC, DHW, and control systems.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of building simulation engines and underlying algorithms.
  • Demonstrated expertise with at least one simulation engine (Energy Plus expertise preferred).
  • Familiar with energy codes (CA Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, ICC, etc.).
  • Quantitative and data analytics skills.
  • Ability to support multiple projects, meet deadlines, work both independently and collaboratively, and communicate effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Track record working with clients to communicate research methods and findings.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Building Science.
  • Experience with multiple building simulation engines, user interfaces, and other third-party tools for optimization and parametric analysis.
  • Experience with large scale parametric building simulation using Ruby or Python.
  • Experience independently developing research plans and executing research related to building energy use, particularly using building energy simulation.
  • Data analytics skills and experience with R, SQL or Python.
  • Experience with California compliance tools, CBECC, CBECC-RES.
  • Experience with code development.
  • Practical building industry experience, such as design engineering, product development, construction, or energy consulting.
  • Professional engineering license.

Benefits

Salary range: $90,000 - $120,000 based on experience. The position title is negotiable based on the candidate's education/experience.
